Old La Honda East,Portola State Park
Let's go visit the newly remodeled Loma Mar Store and the newly reopened Old La Honda West. We can also see if that grumpy guy is still at the bottom of OLH-East, at the bridge, as mentioned in the WWBC mailing list. THIS IS A MIXED-TERRAIN RIDE. Old Haul Road and "Dirt Alpine" are not paved and have short hike-a-bike sections. A gravel or cross bike is recommended, but I stubbornly use my skinny 23mm tire antique bike, without a problem. Meet at the Windy Hill parking lot. Lunch break at the Loma Mar Store and a short snack break at Portola Redwoods HQ. (Yes, this is an "L-LM" pace. If you've ridden with me, you know I do fine on the flats, but am last up the hills. My OLH bridge-to-mailboxes time is ~42 minutes, as a reference point. Contrary to the rumors, I have not been chain smoking since I was a toddler. Feel free to leave me behind.) A challenging work-around is via Trout Gulch and Valencia School Roads. A more comparable work-around is via Huntington Drive. Today I plan to skip the southerly goats and only do the A2C work-around and Larkin Valley/White. This is one of the prettiest rides in our area.
