Grizzly Bear
5 Or More Cities
This is a variant of the "Widershins' counterclockwise loop from Mckenzie Park through Stanford and the Westmont area. Many roads may be ridden opposite the way you normally ride them. Some new twists and turns were introduced, including a visit to the Sausal giraffes. Expect a social ride with lots of scenery, ridden at an LM pace (~14 mph on the flats). Full disclosure: you will get your exercise - some of the climbs, though short, are on the steep side.

Meet William Mueller (see below for contact info) at McKenzie Park at 9:45 AM for a 10:00 ride start. Lunch near the end of the ride in Los Altos.

Rain or AQI>100 cancel

Tucson Getaway Day 1 Saguaro National Park West. Rain rain go away, we are off to Tucson for a few days! We will encounter some urban riding before we climb Gates Pass and continue on to the Arizona-Sonora Desert Museum where we will take a short snack break. Then we get to climb Gates Pass again, yeah! Our return will be on the Tucson Loop Trail, a 131 mile multi use trail that makes Tucson a very cycle friendly city. Please bring enough water and snacks for the whole ride. Part of this ride is remote and I hear there are goatheads, so be sure to have all the necessary tools, tubes, and a pump. Meet at La Posada Lodge and Casitas Tucson, Arizona and be ready to roll promptly at 9:30. Tucson Getaway Day 3 Mt Lemmon, the longest climb in Arizona. Since we rested up yesterday, we will be ready for a big climb today. Starting at the desert floor we will climb to 8,000 feet in 30 miles with an average grade of 5%. Not up for the whole enchilada? No worries, we can turn around at Windy Point for 38 miles and 4184 feet. This ride is weather dependent so we may juggle the daily rides as needed. Plan for all weather conditions, it could be very cold as we go up. Be sure to pack snacks and water. Meet at Madera Valley Shopping Center 9095 E. Tanque Verde Rd, near the Safeway. This remote start is about 35 minutes from our hotel and we will try to arrange carpools for those without vehicles. Breakfast Ride
Meet me at 8:15 AM (rolling at 8:30 AM) at the Ponderosa Park restrooms (811 Henderson Ave, Sunnyvale) for a visit to the best donuts in town, prior to Anthony Flores' ride...or meet us at Stan's Donuts around 9:00 AM.
It's only 4.3 miles to Stan's, then 3.3 miles to the Rose Garden. I'm padding the schedule a bit to allow for long stop lights and not being late to the Rose Garden.
If you're driving in from the south, beware of slow rush hour traffic!

Ride Start: Fowler Creek Park along Altia Ave. Start Location This will probably be the last week for this DRT Route. With Daylight Saving Time and more daylight, we will be able to resume our full training replica of the Death Ride. I like starting with Quimby as it allows us to warm up quickly without carrying a lot of extra layers. I have 2 routes posted. Jennifer will lead the faster cyclists and do the 85-m route. My featherweight Emonda is in the shop, my spare is heavy with higher gearing, uhg, so I will lead from behind and only do the 71-m route. Sunset is 6:06 with Civil Twilight until 6:33 pm. We should have absolutely beautiful weather today. I will resume my usual "OFKRB" rides on alternating non-DRT weekend days. 07-03-2026 07:30:00 07-03-2026 09:30:00 6 ACTC: Short DRT Training 71 or 85 mi, 6 LM , 11,500 or 12,900 ft: Ride Start: Fowler Creek Park along Altia Ave. Start Location This will probably be the last week for this DRT Route. This is a moderate 50 mile training ride with a few challenging, but not too steep, hills to build endurance for one of the longer Tierra Bella routes. The bigger hills come early in this ride.
After a two mile warmup we will take on the mellow 5 mile climb up San Felipe Rd, then a quiet and scenic out and back on Las Animas Rd before summiting the backside of Metcalf where we'll take a brief rest stop (water/restrooms) at the motorcycle park. We then descend Metcalf and head north, over Hassler and up to a loop through Alum Rock Park. We then head back to the start.
Regroup at summits. No one left behind. Start/end at Fowler Creek Park in east San Jose. No planned food stops so come prepared, though some options exist if required. 07-03-2026 10:00:00 07-03-2026 12:00:00 6 ACTC: 50 Mile Training Ride 49 mi, 4 M , 3789 ft: This is a moderate 50 mile training ride with a few challenging, but not too steep, hills to build endurance for one of the longer Tierra Bella routes. Starting from the larger Wood Trail Parking lot (not the smaller Jacques Ridge lot at the intersection), we'll ride up Woods and Barlow to the Mt. Umunhum Trail and then up to the former radar tower. After a some recovery and a few snacks, we'll head back. There are some very steep sections with marginal traction, so some hike-a-bike is likely. Plan to be fully self-sufficient. Be forewarned this is a big ride. To avoid the hardest climbs, you can join the ride at the Mt. Umunhum Trailhead with parking at the Bald Mountain lot (limited). Arrival time for the main ride is uncertain, so we'll join up if you are there when the group from the bottom arrives. Please inform the ride leader via text before 9:00 AM if you are planning to meet the group at the Umunhum Trailhead (mid-ride). Bring a snack to eat at the top! Remember that Daylight Saving Time starts today. 08-03-2026 10:00:00 08-03-2026 12:00:00 6 ACTC: TrailRoller - Mt. Meet in the west church parking lot, corner of E. Hamilton Ave on Leigh Ave, San Jose. We will ride up the San Tomas Aquino Creek trail, do a loop on the levees and return via the Gaudalupe River Trail. About 9 miles of this ride are on hard-packed dirt but easily ridden on standard road bikes. The first mile of that section is usually the worst, so an early turnaround is an option if it's too rough or muddy. Shorebird sightings, salt pond views and the ghost town of Drawbridge are typically impressive. Regroups as necessary and as always, no one left behind. Optional food and drink at the Pruneyard less than a mile from the start. 09-03-2026 10:00:00 09-03-2026 12:00:00 6 ACTC: Mixed Terrain - Alviso Levees 38 mi, 1 LM , 414 ft: Meet in the west church parking lot, corner of E. Ride Start/Finish: Fowler Creek Park on Altia Ave. The forecast is cooler today with a high of 80°F, but it's always about 10 degrees warmer in the sun. We are starting at 8 am as we are still getting accustomed to DST. This is our full Death Ride Training Route. Jennifer will lead the faster cyclists, while I am usually last. I changed the route slightly, so update this on your Garmin. This ride has many "bailout" options, especially at the end of the ride. So you can push yourself to your limit and then limp back to the car. Go at your own pace and shorten the ride as needed. Sunset will be at 7:20 pm with Civil Twilight lasting until 7:46 pm. 21-03-2026 08:00:00 21-03-2026 10:00:00 6 ACTC: Death Ride Training 97.2 mi, 5 LM , 13,422 ft: Ride Start/Finish: Fowler Creek Park on Altia Ave. The forecast is cooler today with a high of 80°F, but it's always about 10 degrees warmer in the sun. Tierra Bella -35 Miles of Glory (and Mild Regret) Start location: Coyote Creek parking lot on Silver Creek Valley Road, just west of Piercy Rd. It’s time to tune up those legs and egos for Tierra Bella. I’ll be leading this 35 mile training ride from the front—setting a smooth, steady pace and pretending I’m not checking over my shoulder every five minutes. Meanwhile, Rosemary will be heroically sweeping from the back, making sure no rider is left behind, dropped, forgotten, or mysteriously “taking a long break” in the bushes. Think of her as the friendly but firm caboose of this operation. Expect: • 35 miles of some scenic and not so scenic fun • 2,900+ feet of climbing disguised as “character building” • A front leader who pretends he’s in charge • A back leader who actually is in charge. Come ready to ride, laugh, and get just the right amount of humbled before Tierra Bella. 22-03-2026 10:00:00 22-03-2026 12:00:00 6 ACTC: Tierra Bella 35 Mile Training Ride 35 mi, 4 LM , 2925 ft: Tierra Bella -35 Miles of Glory (and Mild Regret) Start location: Coyote Creek parking lot on Silver Creek Valley Road, just west of Piercy Rd.
